Résumé

This volume features photographs taken by David Reed of trains in Europe during the 1970s. The countries visited include France, Portugal, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. The pictures taken in France portray the last steam locomotives on shed at Boulogne and Calais. In Portugal, the photographs include a steam journey up the broad-gauge Douro Valley line from Oporto to Barca D’Alva and the local narrow-gauge lines around Oporto. In Switzerland, narrow- and standard-gauge Alpine lines are featured, including the well-known Bernina Pass and Jungfrau railway. In Austria, a variety of steam locomotives are seen, as well as some vintage electric locos of the 1920s and 1930s. Locations include the Eisenerz-Vordernberg rack and pinion line carrying steam-hauled iron ore trains up gradients of as much as 1 in 14. With previously unpublished images throughout, this nostalgic tour of Europe’s railways in the 1970s will delight enthusiasts both young and old.
